Well, when I first heard about ARF, I thought that it had something to do with dogs – arf, bow wow, bark! Perhaps, they should have used the acronym HUM for their foundation since that is the sound that alpacas make most often. But, it would be difficult to determine appropriate words for each of the letters in the foundation. So, I guess that ARF will have to do. The mission of this non-profit foundation is to encourage scientific research for the alpaca industry primarily in the areas of health, husbandry, genetics, and fiber. Just about everything that we need to know about alpacas! They do not actually perform the research themselves. Instead, they encourage researchers to apply for ARF funding and to conduct their own research using the peer-review process. This process assures that the results are relevant and appropriate. By the way, one hundred percent of all donations are used for alpaca research. So, where do they get their funds? Well, they are extremely creative in their fundraising efforts. You can give a simple donation. Or you can give a donation as a memorial in the name of a favorite person – or alpaca. You can also show your appreciation for your veterinarian by honoring them with a gift in their name. You can donate the sale of an alpaca or the sale of a breeding to ARF. Or even a portion of your profits from your alpaca business. How about donating your car? Or sponsoring an alpaca study? My favorite has got to be The Alpaca Bean! Twenty percent of the net profit from the sale of The Alpaca Bean Coffees from The Alpaca Bean Coffee Company are donated to alpaca research. However, they do not use real alpaca beans! LOL. Instead, they use fine imported and fresh roasted coffee beans. I am sure that our alpacas are humming their gratitude about the work at the Alpaca Research Foundation.
