Alpaca Uses
Alpaca uses are quite varied depending on your wants and needs.
Sure, alpacas are cute. But, what do you do with an alpaca? Well, you have lots of choices!
The main end product for alpacas is their
fleece
. Their
fiber
can be processed into gorgeous garments and premium products.
However, most alpaca owners breed their alpacas, and sell the offspring. Right now, breeding is more profitable than the fiber. Offering stud services is another use that the boys do not mind at all!
Of course, you can also take your alpacas to
alpaca shows
to show them off to other alpaca owners.
In South America, alpacas become dinner. But in the United States they would be really expensive alpaca burgers!
Because alpacas are so intelligent, they can be used in
animal assisted therapy
to help disabled kids or nursing home residents. We are training our alpacas for such a purpose.
They can also be utilized in special ceremonies. For example, they could be ring bearers or flower girls in weddings. Sierra, my daughter, wants to use alpacas in her wedding. But she is only 13 so I do not want to think about that possibility just yet!
Alpacas can also be trained to carry a pack. However, they are not able to carry as much as a llama due to their smaller size. However, they could carry your lunch, water, and picnic supplies on hiking outings. We are going to go hiking with our young male alpaca this spring. It should be so fun!
Alpaca care
is relatively easy, too.
The best of all alpaca uses is giving them daily hugs. After all, we all need our hugs!
